I know that listening to music while reading is maybe an unpopular opinion, but I enjoy listening to instrumental music while I’m reading! I think it can help set the tone or drown out other noises in the area. I also listen to these while writing blog posts!
Ambient Worlds is a YouTube channel that uses music from movies and TV and combines that with ambient sound, like rain, wind, and white noise. The mixing is done really well because the sounds and the music don’t overpower each other and you can still hear both. The videos are also super long, so you don’t have to worry about it stopping. Some of my favorites are The Last Samurai, Downton Abbey, and Rivendell.
Yiruma is a South Korean pianist and composer. I love piano music in general, but I really love his works. He is best known for songs like “River Flows in You” and “Kiss the Rain” but really, all of his works are very nice. There are plenty of playlists around, so here is just one, about 2 hours long.
I love listening to soundtracks! Sometimes, I will listen to a soundtrack from a specific thing, other times I will listen to a mix of tracks from different shows or movies. Some of my favorites are:
- Lord of The Rings & The Hobbit
- 5 Centimeters Per Second
- The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
- To The Moon
Sungha Jung, a musician on YouTube has over 1,000 videos of himself either covering songs on the guitar or playing original pieces. My favorite is Felicity, an original piece from a while ago. He is really talented and he uploads all the time, so there is always new content from him.
Sometimes, I will also find playlists specific to what kind of book I’m reading. For example, if I’m reading a book featuring fae, I will look for playlists on YouTube and Spotify that are along the lines of “faerie instrumentals”.
Do you like the listen to music while you read? If so, what do you listen to?
