I have come to a realization recently about what kind of relationships I enjoy in books and what feels memorable to me. I do love romance novels, but since they are usually one and done, I don’t feel like I really have enough time to grow attached to the characters or the relationship. This means that they just aren’t that memorable to me. I also love slow burns, and in a single book, I feel like there just isn’t enough time to develop it and still have it be paced well. I also love situations that aren’t necessarily romantic, but can show a strengthening bond between characters. This leaves me with my conclusion: I like romantic relationships from series that are not primarily romance.
I have put together a list of my favorite romantic relationships from books. Not all of these follow my conclusion above, but most of them do!
Inej Ghafa and Kaz Brekker
Six of Crows
The dynamic between Inej and Kaz is just so enjoyable to read. I absolutely love the tension between them! They constantly show, rather than tell, each other that they care and I love that.
Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring
My heart warms just thinking about these two! They are so soft and they care about each other so much. I absolutely love how they handle problems together and work through things. They are the absolute cutest, no exaggeration!
Lazlo Strange and Sarai
Strange the Dreamer
I love Lazlo and Sarai together because they are so soft, but at the same time, their story is kind of tragic. I adore the way they met and got to know each other.
Laia and Elias Veturius
An Ember in the Ashes
My heart hurts when I think about these two because I really just want the best for them. They’ve both been through so much, and they deserve a little while to just enjoy each other’s company without outside threats getting in the way.
Nahri and Dara
The City of Brass
I initially didn’t think I would like these two together. It seemed a little bit cliche at first, but as time went on, I loved the fact that it was kind of a forbidden romance. Their relationship turns quite tragic, and that just made me love them together even more.
Roy Mustang and Riza Hawkeye
Okay, so I haven’t actually read the entirety of this manga, but I had seen both anime adaptions and I don’t care what form these two are in, I adore them. They both such great characters on their own, but together they are just too good. I love their history and the dynamic between them in every area of their lives. While they weren’t necessarily confirmed to be romantic interests, I think there is plenty of supporting evidence.
Rose Hathaway and Dimitri Belikov
I was thinking about these two recently, and I don’t know if I would love their dynamic if I was reading this series for the first time now. Dimitri is Rose’s mentor/teacher and they have a 7 year age difference. However, the tension between them is absolutely off the charts. I remember reading this series in high school and absolutely swooning.
