Spoiler Free Review:

I was initially drawn to this book because I think automatons are cool and something I haven’t really read many books about. The Automae in this book are an interesting mixture of science and magic. The book doesn’t delve too deeply into how they are actually made or function. With books involving artificial intelligence or artificial life, I love the question of what makes them a person. Are they a person simply because they function and can communicate, or there is something more, like a soul, that has to be involved? Because this is really interesting to me, I enjoyed this aspect of the book, though it wasn’t discussed at length.

I absolutely adored the romance in this book! That was another selling point for me because it is a f/f relationship. It is kind of one sided and had a little bit of hate to love but it was so good! I loved all of the language surrounding their changing feelings for each other. I am so excited to see where it goes in future books.

They stared at each other. Ayla’s eyes glinted in the moonlight – not golden, not like Crier’s. Deep wells. Swallowing the light.

pg. 264

There was an air of mystery and intrigue in the book that I really liked. The characters are trying to uncover schemes of the villain, so it created a really intense atmosphere that kept me interested in what the nefarious plans where. The villain wasn’t surprising, but he was so repulsive to me, so I was rooting for everyone trying to take him down.

I really can’t wait for the next book! I thoroughly enjoyed this one and I flew through it, especially the second half. I love the romance as well as the scientific and magical elements of Automae.
