This series has taken me by surprise so much! I was initially turned off of it because of the cover and it just sounded kind of typical, but it has grown into so much more for me. Each book gets better and better!
I have come to love the main three characters so much! I tried to pick a favorite point of view, but I really just loved seeing all of them, which means that I was in pain a lot because everyone goes through so much in this book. I love the strength, resilience, and determination that Laia, Helene, and Elias have. They are forced to make such difficult decisions that have bad consequences either way, but they still manage to stick to what they believe in.
I think one thing that makes this series unique in YA, especially when the first book came out in 2015, is that it doesn’t sugar coat things. It doesn’t shy away from violence or the threat of violence. There were some scenes in this book that portrayed what is was like for people affected by war, particularly refugees. They were treated terribly, and that isn’t so different from our world today.
I absolutely adore Laia’s relationship with her brother. It was definitely shown more in the beginning of the book, but I enjoyed seeing them finally get to be together.
I really enjoy the romance in this book. It definitely isn’t heavy on it, but I love what the two potential couples could be.
I will have to say, I get confused by some of the plot stuff sometimes, but I think that is because I read these books pretty spaced out.
I am so ready for the next book, which I believe is the last in the series. There is no title or release day, but I need to see what happens to these characters! I am so attached and I just want all of them to be happy.
