I really, really wanted to love this series. After seeing so many bookstagrammers and booktubers have entire shelves dedicated to all the editions of this book, I was ready to join them. Unfortunately, I was left pretty disappointed.

I didn’t do a review for A Darker Shade of Magic, but I did do a review of A Gathering of Shadows that wrapped up my feelings for the series at the time. Going into this book, I was hopeful, since I had heard that this was the best of the trilogy. I was intrigued by where the second book left off, so I was interested in reading this one.

The cliffhanger at the end of book two was resolved way too quickly for me in this book. I can imagine the wait between books being published was rough, but I think a good cliffhanger needs more than this one had. It just did not have the tension that I wanted.

Aside from that, I feel like this book was unnecessarily long because it really didn’t feel like much happened, despite it being 640 pages long. Again, I didn’t really feel a connection to the characters, so during the parts I was supposed to be emotional, I just didn’t feel anything.

During the climax of the book, I really found myself thinking “wait, is that it?“. It was just underwhelming. Nothing about this book was necessarily bad, I was just underwhelmed, which led to my disappointment.

I don’t think the three books felt very connected. A Darker Shade of Magic really can be a stand alone book, so the series overall felt disconnected. If you asked me what this series was about, I’m not sure I could give you a good overview of the whole thing.

Overall, I’m just disappointed. I’m not sure if the hype is what left me disappointed or if I would have felt that way if I’d never heard of these books before. Sadly, I don’t think I will be reading any more of V.E. Schwab’s books. Her writing style and way of telling stories just isn’t for me.
